A FUTURE STATION FOR HIGH SPEED TRAINS IN EUROPE: A EUROPEAN COMPETITION (1995)

MEMORY
The European Union, through the Ministry of Public Works of the Republic of France and the Association of European Cities with High Speed Trains summoned an International Competition. Our proposal under the slogan “AVENUE” of the architect Francisco F. Longoria and BB&J Transport Engineering, Alberto Corazón designers and the sociologist José Mazariegos, won the 1st prize of the competition. Conceptually high speed networks in Europe ties the cities in an integrated network that should be located in central space avoiding any architectural artifact in a creative effort to eliminate mercantile or futile spaces that may be located in nearby buildings.
The station in itself uses high technology for efficiency, speed, silence and cleanliness together with spatial precision of recognizing which ticket corresponds with the underground location of the train door. The station is the very surface of the city with light street furniture for a safe enclosure and vertical communication to the cockpit on the city surface on the connected door at the train platform. Some exterior space for offices may help to define new squares and underground spaces will be habilitated for the vehicle parking garage and bus terminal. The jury evaluated this solution as the only one that could be qualified as land art and avoided commercial artifacts.
