REDEVELOPMENT OF THE HISTORIC CENTER OF THE CITY OF ZARAGOZA (1970)

MEMORY
The project won a National Competition but did not result in commission for further, professional work. Full knowledge of urban renewal principles, processes, methodologies and design criteria was applied to the whole Roman center of Zaragoza including:
- Detailed analysis of the historical development of the old Roman castrum into an Arab capital or a Renaissance center of monarchy provides most interesting examples of city fabric evolution.
- Detailed analysis of land use, building heights and building state of decay provides the tools for cataloguing of buildings and mapping of homogeneous areas fitted for differentiated treatments of maintenance, conservation, reconstruction, rehabilitation, local or massive renewal.
- mage analysis made it possible to differentiate positive and negative monuments, buildings or streets relating to the urban image and the accomplishment of standards.
- An integrated proposal for the old Roman castrum subjective to today’s pressures allowed for proposing 2 focuses of intense renewal and a high financial return that may be transferred for the rehabilitation of non-competitive uses and derelict areas.
- Nodes of positive-image value in the inner structure are made accessible from the ring-road traffic and connected by internal pedestrian streets.
