A NEW TOWN “NUEVA CIUDAD DE VIÑUELAS” IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF MADRID (1972-1976)

MEMORY
For four years the new town development was proposed for the north outskirts of Madrid. On a land of 4,500 hectares, a development of 20,000 dwelling units was structured and planned to be presented to central Spanish government for approval. Design factors were explicitly following the emerging new ideas of polarization, clustering and decentralized densification. A hierarchy of streets answers to public and private transportation modal split. Diverse urban typologists from central blocks scatter single family houses were interwoven with a chain of parks from the local neighborhood to a gigantic natural reserve. The town was not developed because of the competition of a nearby public new city.
