A PROPOSAL FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION “NEW OPERA HOUSE OF MADRID” (1964)

MEMORY

This competition was launched with the objective of substituting the existing rehabilitation of the Teatro Real de la Ópera in Madrid by building a full new facility in the center of the urban redevelopment area, AZCA of Madrid. It is shown as an example of a period of organic architecture. It did not receive any prize but was highly acclaimed in architectural design circles (ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, ARCHITECTÙRE D ́AUJOURDUI, JAPAN ARCHITECT). As Monica Pidgeon, Director at that time of ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, proclaimed, “...only one project had the expressive capacity, structural organization and constructivist sense that could fulfill the prerequisites of a creative new piece of architecture...” “...the plan shows a dramatic sense of organizing segregated parts fused in a whole....meaning a new concept of a great musical center adaptable to changes of theatrical performances and public participation, firmly anchored to the ground by a central heart that serves as a large storage for a repertoire of already mounted opera sets...”
