REDEVELOPMENT OF THE “PLAZA DE LA ESTACIÓN”: AZCA-NUEVOS MINISTERIOS AND UNDERGROUND RAILROAD STATION

MEMORY
Commissioned by RENFE National Railroad Company of Spain, the full southeast corner of the large urban renewal of AZCA, a gigantic center of offices, commercial center and residences, was projected for redevelopment. The first project included a sunken, pedestrian plaza surrounded by a service arcade connected with the existing underground railroad station of 300 meters length built in 1932-1960. The station is elongated under the new plaza and on top of the tracks is a large pavilion the presidential and public relations offices of the National Railroad Company. Several developments of this project have been designed from 1989-1990 when a provisional transversal vault was designed and built by our offices keeping the plaza in its initial state as a street level parking lot.
