NEW BUILDING FOR THE FACULTY OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES AT THE UNIVERSTIY CITY OF THE COMPLUTENSE UNIVERSITY OF MADRID (1987)

MEMORY
The development of a new lending division of the National Library and the enormous growth of the mandatory, legal deposit of 3 volumes of every publication in the country requires more than 3 km of shared growth every year. The total planned space is divided into a complex spiral composition. A first block for classrooms, cafeteria, administration, services, librarian offices and repair workshops, and loading area is connected to a central area around the patio of 12 stories high of office space enclosed by a curtained wall. 3 wings of 2 modules each for storage of books and other materials have been developed in 3 phases of construction. Each deposit module with 5 double story floors may store 2 million volumes each. One of the modules includes a 8 story height trans-elevator, a robot to move shelves and books to be transported to the librarian offices. Quality of architecture arises from a total vertical and horizontal modular coordination of 0.80 x 0,80 m and their multiples. Storage silos do not need windows and are reserved only for the administrative areas and the interior curtained wall is for working space. The building infrastructure, parking and garden are finished housing 12 million volumes. It has required a total of 20 years of cooperation with the National Library but always through winning open competitions.
