NATIONAL COMPETITION FOR THE NEW HEADQUARTERS OF THE TOWN HALL OF MADRID AND ITS CULTURAL SPACE (2005)

MEMORY

The proposal is an exercise in reinvention of a sophisticated, modern eclecticism of the great architect A. Palacios for the Central Post Office of Spain.

Having mastered a singular vernacular and contemporary facade, the interior atriums are easily adaptable for the required public spaces of the city hall. The tower is treated for public presence as community facilities, restaurant and observatory tower of the city. The internal axial vertex is transformed to become a new structure that contains the public meeting rooms as an amphitheater and the symbolic center of the Assembly Hall. The defective north end of the main atrium and light, triangular patio is also reformed, converted into a new institutional lounge of moveable platforms to create a moveable scenario for all sort of public acts and representations.

Against the suggestions of the Bases of the Competition, the back open space of the alley and open court are not covered but left as a garden covered by canopies to protect against the sun due to the excellent weather of Madrid and avoiding the unnecessary expensive glass vault of difficult climate control and maintenance. Probably for this reason, the project was rejected.
